Queen Sonja opens Norway House in Minneapolis

Queen Sonja is currently in Minnesota to strengthen the historic ties that exist between this American state and Norway. A large descendant community of Norwegian emigrants lives in Minnesota. This Sunday, October 16, the Queen of Norway inaugurated the Norway House in Minneapolis.

The Queen of Norway with the Norwegian community in Minnesota

In Minnesota, one in six residents, or approximately 870,000 people, has Norwegian origins. With its large community of Norwegian descendants, this state of 5.7 million inhabitants keeps traces of this Scandinavian influence through institutions, organizations and schools. There is also a large community of Swedish origin.

Queen Sonja was invited to inaugurate Norway House this Sunday, October 16, 2022 in Minneapolis. This new cultural building houses a gallery, an event space and a library specifically for genealogical research. The Norway House is therefore equipped with more important cultural and research spaces. Those in charge of the place took advantage of the presence of the wife of King Harald V to present the program of their activities for this year.

“It is truly inspiring to see how the descendants of emigrants have prospered, contributing so much to American society”said Queen Sonja in her inaugural address. “At the same time, they haven’t forgotten their history. They look to organizations like Norway House to strengthen their ties to the Norway of their ancestors and the Norway of today. » A folklore show was organized as part of the inauguration.
