Italy – Queen Rania, wife of Jordanian King Abdullah II, confirmed yesterday, Saturday, that the “Western double standards” towards the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip contributed to the “loss of confidence” in global moral rules and standards.
Queen Rania said, “The people of the world deserve a global system that can be trusted.”
This came during her speech at the 50th session of the Ambrosetti International Economic Forum in the Italian city of Cernobbio, according to a statement issued by her office, a copy of which was received by Anadolu Agency.
The forum is held every year at the beginning of September in Cernobbio on the shores of Lake Como.
The Queen stressed that “Western double standards regarding the Israeli war on Gaza have contributed to a loss of confidence in the moral rules and standards that we have long assumed govern our world.”
It called on the international community to “support international humanitarian law,” according to the same statement.
“The people of the world deserve a global order they can trust, one that is free of bigotry, moral loopholes and blind spots,” Queen Rania said.
She added, “The majority view Israel’s war on Gaza as a blatant double standard (…) or worse: a clear abandonment of any standards at all.”
The Jordanian Queen noted that “almost all of Gaza’s population is suffering from severe food insecurity, and Palestinian children are starving, as Israel impedes access to humanitarian aid.”
With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 135,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate halt, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent genocide and improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Queen Rania said: “For decades before October 7, 2023, the Palestinians were subjected to a crushing and criminal occupation. The Palestinians also have the right to live in peace and security, and yet we are still standing still.”
She asked: “Does the world expect any Western people to endure a similar life under occupation and violence?!”
The Queen said, “This injustice has become acceptable and justified in front of the eyes and ears of the international community in Palestine.”
She continued: “Does the world say that Israel’s security is more important than the security of any other country, and therefore no action is considered prohibited in this regard?!”
Queen Rania considered that “this devaluation of human life must be called by its name: racism against the Palestinians.”
She stressed that “this failure cannot continue.”
She stressed that “double standards go beyond hypocrisy, they are dehumanizing and brutal, and if that’s not racism, I don’t know what is!”
“Selectively applying international humanitarian law and disregarding international courts and their decisions is a new era of global imbalance,” the Queen said.
“So we must reject double standards, demand accountability, and find a common path to peace, to create the future that Palestinians and Israelis deserve…and that we all deserve,” she continued.
The wife of the Jordanian King put forward a number of basic principles that are “indisputable and can represent a common basis for a just and lasting common peace.”
In the same context, she pointed out that “peace cannot be achieved by forcing the weaker party to accept unequal terms, as the Palestinians and Israelis have an equal right to security and self-determination.”
“For justice to prevail, there must be accountability,” she added.
Queen Rania pointed out that “the opposite of accountability is impunity, and that feeling of immunity does not come about overnight.”
She added: “In the absence of accountability, talk of international law, justice and human rights becomes hollow rhetoric.”
The Queen stressed that “true security is not a gain for one party at the expense of the other, and just peace makes security mutual.”
She explained that “for decades, Israel has sought to ensure the safety of its citizens by denying the Palestinians their right to do so, and this path is unsustainable, as the lack of security for either side does not serve the other.”
“Extremist voices must be banned from participating in the dialogue,” she said.
Queen Rania concluded her remarks by saying: “The future cannot be held hostage by those who call for famine, genocide and mass displacement… who praise collective punishment and defend the unjustifiable.”
