What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a painful condition that affects the metatarsal, most often the place between the third and fourth toes. It may feel like you are standing on a rock in your shoe or a crease in your sock.

Morton’s neuroma is a thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves in the toes. This can cause a sharp burning pain in the ball of the foot. You may have itching, burning, or numbness in the affected fingers.

High-heeled or tight shoes are linked to the development of Morton’s neuroma. Many people find relief in starting to wear shoes with lower heels and a wider toe box. Sometimes corticosteroid injections or surgery is necessary.

Symptoms

The information provided by the clinic indicates that in general, there is no external sign of this condition, such as a lump; however, it might present the following symptoms:

A feeling as if you have a pebble in your shoe A burning pain in the ball of your foot that may radiate down your toes Tingling or numbness in your toes

They also refer that removing the shoe and rubbing the foot continuously helps to relieve pain.

Which are the risk factors?

High heels. Wearing high-heeled, tight-fitting or poorly-fitting shoes can put extra pressure on your toes and the bottom of your foot.

Certain sports. Participating in high-impact athletic activities like jogging or running can subject your feet to repetitive injury. Sports that are characterized by tight-fitting shoes, such as snow skiing or mountain climbing, can put pressure on your toes.
