The Queen has visited India in 1961, 1983 and 1997. In October 1997, the Queen arrived at the Pardesi Synagogue in Kochi. The Queen was received by Synagogue Warden Sami Halegwa and his wife Queenie Halegwa. The Rapid Action Force and the Kerala Armed Police blocked the roads and provided security to them. Prince Philip also accompanied the Queen during the visit. The two also visited Vasco da Gama’s tomb at St. Francis Church.

Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry is the oldest and most beautiful synagogue. The British media reported at the time that they had come to Kochi during their visit to India because they had heard a lot regarding the centuries-old Jewish settlement in Mattancherry. On October 17, 1997, high security was imposed in Kochi to mark the Queen’s visit. Two hours before the Queen arrived in the city, massive restrictions on gatherings were imposed. Due to tight security, only nine people, including the then Chief Minister EK Nayanar and his wife, got a chance to meet Queen Elizabeth.
