Hidden at the bottom of the Parc de Champagne, a UNESCO world heritage site, La Magnifique Society presents each year nearly forty artists spread over 3 stages, spaces for exchange and sharing between festival-goers. A festival on a human scale in a unique place where a warm atmosphere reigns. For its 6th edition, which took place on June 23, 24 & 25, 2023, the festival invited major French-speaking artists such as Aya Nakamura and Angèle, while taking a step towards the African musical sphere with the programs of Lova Lova, Kabeaushé and afrobeats superstar Rema.
Invited by the festival organizers, PAM took the reins of the festival’s club stage – the Royal Garden – by inviting Ugandan DJ Decay and Tanzanian mother-daughter duo Queen Asher and Rehema Tajiri. A 100% female set mixing trap, dancehall and afro-electro vibes from DJ Decay and frenetic singeli rhythms.
Singeli, a descendant of the Tanzanian taraab, is an ultra-fast sound, lined with keyboards, a veritable soundtrack to the neighborhoods of Dar es Salaam. The phenomenon continues to grow and now dominates the airwaves, dancefloors, blockparties and festivals in Tanzania
To this male-dominated music genre, producer and DJ Queen Asher and singer Rehema Tajiri bring a new flavor, both at home and internationally.
Locally, Singeli has had a reputation as thug music. We quickly associate weed smokers and knife wielders with its chaotic rhythms and frantic cadences. “ I wanted to change this image », explains Rehema Tajiri. « My lyrics mainly talk regarding happiness and life in general ».
Initially a dancer of Congolese music and a musician, despite her age, Rehema did not in fact resist the phenomenon. She takes advantage of her years of experience to “ educate young people to live better », even though the genre is taking over stages around the world. Asher, who produces her own beats and mixes live on stage, takes on a different responsibility as a woman. “ I give a different vibe to the Singeli, full of feminine energy and confidence “, she explains. “ Everyone has their own magic, and I wanted to try to find mine. »
More than partners, beyond their mother-daughter relationship, Asher and Rehema are above all friends. In the documentary, we see them sleeping on each other’s shoulders during the bus ride from Paris, meeting the Nigerian star Rema just following her concert, or even covering themselves in glitter – at the mini workshop village of the festival – before setting the dance floor of the Royal Garden on fire. Rehema proudly proclaims: “ We are the queens of the Singeli ».
