An unpredictable three-way fight is taking shape in Quebec as support for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party is sedimenting to more than 20%, according to a new survey from Léger 360.
“It’s quite spectacular for the Conservative Party to obtain 22% of voting intentions in Quebec,” believes pollster Jean-Marc Léger. We find ourselves in a three-way fight, which is still unpredictable.”
Élan
Across the country, Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party has been racing in voting intentions for several weeks now, with a lead of more than 10 percentage points over Justin Trudeau’s Liberals.
Mr. Poilievre is first in all regions of the country, except in Quebec, where the Bloc Québécois leads (30%) ahead of the Liberal Party of Canada (27%).
But according to Mr. Léger, Mr. Poilievre’s momentum is starting to have an “effect” in Quebec, which historically remains the “last bastion once morest the conservatives.”
As elsewhere in the country, the popularity of the Conservative leader is largely driven by young people and those under 55.
“The driving forces of Quebec are turning conservative,” analyzes Mr. Léger. Older people remain Bloc and Liberal.”
However, the data indicates that women remain an Achilles heel for Mr. Poilievre.
Star candidates?
Mr. Léger concedes that the next federal elections are not tomorrow, but maintains that the momentum of the Conservative Party in Quebec will make its task easier in view of the next election.
“This poll gives him the opportunity to seek out major candidates, get money and become a real alternative” to the Liberals, the pollster believes.
In this context, Pierre Poilievre’s future positions in Quebec, particularly on the Law on State Secularism and linguistic policies, will be worth monitoring, summarizes Mr. Léger.
