Spring break is fast approaching and the news is bad. Forecast.

Significant deficit

The deficit of snow on the ground is currently attracting attention in Quebec. As spring break approaches, certain activities might even be compromised in regions south of the metropolis. In Montérégie and Estrie, snow cover is almost zero in places. We only observe 2 cm in Sherbrooke. This unusual situation has lasted for several weeks and, according to the models, is not expected to improve by the end of the season.

Thin layer

As strange as it may seem, there is currently more snow received in February in New York than in Montreal. In fact, the American megalopolis records 11 cm while the Quebec metropolis has only 8 cm. This weekend, the passage of a system might generate a few centimeters of snow for the metropolis, but this quantity would be clearly insufficient to close the gap compared to normal which has been widening for a month.

Bad trajectories

When it comes to snow, Quebec is missing the boat. If you are a fan of winter activities, you will certainly be disappointed to learn that the big systems take a path too far south for the province to receive its share of snow. In several cases, it is the Maritimes that have inherited these large accumulations.

Abnormal softness

Since the start of 2024, temperatures have been abnormally mild in Quebec. In fact, almost all of Canada is recording a positive anomaly. In some areas, it can reach 10°C above normal. The atmospheric context disadvantages snow in two ways. On the one hand, cold spells push the jet stream too far south and the systems avoid Quebec. On the other hand, bursts of mildness cause precipitation to switch to rain.
