Should access to housing be an acquired right in Quebec? At least that is what the commissioners of the Estates General, including a professor of social work from UQO, are calling for in a report published Friday.

The document presents 50 recommendations to stem the marginalization and health challenges linked to the absence of stable housing.
The commissioners ask in particular to integrate the right to housing into the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.
In response, the office of the Minister of Housing mentioned that they have read the report, but that they will take the time to analyze it carefully before taking a position.
They conclude by recalling that they are sparing no effort to ensure that Quebecers can access housing that meets their financial capacity.
For its part, the League of Rights and Freedoms took no time to welcome the report, which it sees as an opportunity to improve the rights of citizens, particularly those of the most vulnerable.
“If we improved the situation of the right to housing, we would also improve the realization and exercise of other human rights,” declared Laurence Guénette, coordinator and spokesperson for the League of Rights and Freedoms.
This request was also welcomed by the coordinator of Logemen’occup, who has been calling for this measure for several years.
The Summit of the Estates General of Social Work will take place on April 19 and 20.
The commissioners hope that their report will be completed by then.
