Quebec’s Extended Deposit: Increased Reimbursements for Beverage Containers from November 1, 2023

2023-09-28 14:45:00

After years of waiting, the first phase of the extended deposit will begin in Quebec on 1is November, when the amount given to consumers will increase to 10 cents for the majority of containers.

The deposit will then be extended to all drinks sold in aluminum containers from 100 ml to 2 l.

As a result, the amount of the deposit will be standardized at 10 cents, with the exception of certain glass bottles from 500 ml to 2 l, already deposited, which will be deposited at 25 cents.

Still “for reasons of standardization”, the reimbursement for the deposit for beer cans over 450 ml, which was previously 20 cents, will be halved from November 15, after a grace period of two weeks .

Citizens therefore only have a few weeks left to benefit from the old rate.

“If the vast majority of containers will go from 5 cents to 10 cents, there is a certain number of containers, which is still much less important in volume, which will go from 20 cents to 10 cents, i.e. the large beer can formats,” explained Normand Bisson, president and CEO of the Quebec Association for the Recovery of Beverage Containers (AQRCB).

For the second phase, several actions of which were expected this year before being postponed, we will have to wait until March 1, 2025.

On this date, the deposit will be extended to all beverage containers from 100 ml to 2 l in aluminum, glass, plastic or multi-layered, such as wine and spirits bottles, water bottles and cardboard boxes. milk or juice.

“The modernization of the deposit constitutes a circular economy project eagerly awaited by the population. For nearly 40 years, Quebecers have supported this initiative with conviction and contributed to its success,” says Mr. Bisson.

The objective of the program is to increase the container recovery rate from 73 to 90%. Ultimately, the number of returnable beverage containers will increase from 2.5 billion to 5 billion in Quebec.
