More than 2,500 tenants were evicted from their private seniors’ residence (RPA) in one year in Quebec, revealed Wednesday an investigation by the Quebec Association of Retirees from the Public and Parapublic Sectors (AQRP).
A quarter of the affected residents are in Greater Montreal, while the other quarter is in the Capitale-Nationale with more than 600 residents in each of these regions.
According to the information revealed by the investigation, there were 88 RPA closures between October 1, 2022 and September 1, 2023, throughout Quebec.
“It is unacceptable that our seniors who are vulnerable and sometimes struggling with health problems find themselves without housing. The Minister responsible for Housing must include a clause in her Bill 31 which prohibits evictions from private seniors’ residences,” maintains the provincial president of the AQRP, Paul-René Roy.
“The bill specifies that compensation to be paid in the event of eviction covers up to a maximum of 24 months, plus a sum to cover the move. Currently, the compensation provided is 3 months and reasonable moving expenses,” stipulates the Quebec Association of Retirees from the Public and Parapublic Sectors (AQRP) in a press release.
“The evictions provided for by Bill 31 seem to be carried out in bad faith, in contradiction with what it puts forward,” adds Mr. Roy.
The Association is calling on the Minister responsible for Housing in Quebec, France-Élaine Duranceau, to ask her to add a specific clause to Bill 31 forcing owners who wish to convert residences into rental housing to submit to the Housing Program. affordable housing in Quebec.
