Renaud Lavoie returned to the subject of the abolition of fights in the QMJHL on Monday in his daily column on the “JiC” program on TVA Sports.
Since this decision, “Quebec has become the laughingstock of hockey,” he said.
“We are laughed at in the hockey world, where no one understands the direction we are taking. I read The Journal of Montreal every day and I haven’t seen a single article in the last five years on the problems of fighting in the QMJHL. I don’t know where the CAQ finds the problem. I don’t find it, I don’t see it and I don’t feel it.”
The TVA Sports journalist does not agree with the argument that fighting should be banned in Quebec since it is already the case in the United States.
“People back home are right that players are not allowed to fight in the NCAA. I’ll tell you guys wear full grids in the NCAA. There are quite a few hits going on, but to throw down the gloves once morest someone who has a full grid, I wish you luck.
“We will have to change several things in my opinion if we want to prevent fights (in the QMJHL). Are we going to tell them to play with full grids? Is this what we want? Or do we want to keep the players on the ice honest and responsible and when there is a violent gesture on the ice, we answer for his actions?
Renaud Lavoie specifies, however, that not all players should make their fists speak. He gave the example of Nikolaj Ehlers, who must have regretted throwing the gloves in front of Brayden Schenn, as you will see in the video above.
