After several flight delays and cancellations, a couple from the Quebec region decided to take drastic measures to return to Pont-Rouge: they took an Uber for more than 800 kilometers.
Mélissa St-Laurent and her husband were to return from a trip to Florida last Sunday via San Antonio, but not everything went as planned.
“When we arrived at the airport, they already told us that our flight was canceled, and that they were rebooking us on a new flight, she explains. Our flight was supposed to be at 2:30 a.m., but it was delayed to 3:30 a.m., then 4:30 a.m.
The flight was eventually canceled and the next day the delays followed once more.
The couple were eventually able to travel to New York on Tuesday.
But further delays and cancellations Wednesday due to wildfire-related weather conditions have Quebecers turning to Uber’s option.
“When our driver arrived, we explained our story to him and then what we asked him was to bring us to customs, says Ms. St-Laurent. He offered to pick up his passport to take us home.”
The total bill is $1100 US, or $1450 Canadian.
“I contacted my insurance company and they told me to file my claim and they sent me all the paperwork to deal with so that’s going to be a different story,” she continues.
Mélissa St-Laurent says, however, she has fond memories of her trip.
“It’s just that it makes us nervous to travel once more,” she says.
United Airlines declined our request for an interview on this subject.
