Quebec companies have been ordered to pay more than $550,000 in damages for having retransmitted the signal of TVA Sports channels in hotels without authorization.
Judge Sébastien Grammond pinned the companies Konek Technologies, Cooperative de câblodistribution Hill Valley, Libéo Inc and the founder of these companies, Jean-François Rousseau, in a judgment rendered on Monday.
In addition to ordering them to pay $553,000 in statutory damages, he issued an injunction prohibiting them from broadcasting the TVA Sports signal.
According to the judgment, Konek has developed a telecommunications system for hotels which notably made it possible to offer Wi-Fi, IP telephony and the retransmission of television channels in the rooms.
The service, distributed by Hill Valley, found takers in various hotels which took the opportunity to end their cable television subscription.
However, the companies never obtained permission from Quebecor to retransmit the signals of the TVA channels, it is noted in the judgment.
“It should be apparent that Konek and Hill Valley originally obtained the signals they were retransmitting by subscribing to Videotron services.
When the chase started [le 26 février 2021]Videotron has canceled this service.
To get the signal for the TVA Sports channels, Konek and Hill Valley subscribed to internet streaming services.
Groupe TVA has never authorized these services to retransmit the signal of the TVA Sports channels, and according to the evidence submitted to the court, these services are probably illegal, ”detailed judge Sébastien Grammond.
