Quebec caught under a dome of icy air

The low pressure system that has affected the province since Wednesday has created a dome of cold air that should remain over Quebec at least until Friday.

This dome, which traps cold air from the north, causes temperatures to drop and gives rise to snowfall.

«[Le système dépressionnaire] bounces off the wall, it brings cold air. There, it is -11oC, -15oC in the south. With these temperatures, what we feared the most was blowing snow and road conditions,” explained Marie-Ève Giguère, meteorologist for Environment Canada.

In Montreal, the wind chill might reach near -27 overnight from Thursday to Friday, and -23 during the day on Friday. The scenario will be similar on the Quebec side with a cooling of -22 tonight, and -20 on Friday.

In addition, the expected storm was less severe than expected. “We saw more accumulation than there is. […] The snow went a little further north than we thought,” said Marie-Ève Giguère.

“You have to keep in mind that there are a few other centimeters that will be added to that,” she added.

The meteorologist recalls that the low pressure system will affect the province “in two periods”. The first started Wednesday evening, and the second snowfall should bring between two and five centimeters, depending on the sector, by Friday morning.

No time to put away the shovel

The weekend promises to be more “quiet”, according to Marie-Ève Giguère who advises, however, to keep her shovel handy in anticipation of a snowfall on Tuesday.

“I think we’re going to have to shovel once more in the south of the province, and the cold air will also continue.”
