Quebec behind in the race for the 3rd dose

The vaccination campaign for the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Quebec is progressing steadily compared to that of other Canadian provinces and other industrialized countries.

Pros and cons

WHO:

  • Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) believe that vaccine boosters are not “a viable strategy” to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • They are calling for updated vaccines that would better prevent the transmission of the virus.

Health Canada:

  • The National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends a booster dose of a vaccine for people over the age of 18.
  • To have access to it, the vaccination series must have been completed for at least 6 months.

CDC:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend a booster dose.
  • It increases the immune response and prevents more severe forms of the virus, among others, in people over 65 years of age.

Quebec and Canada occupy an unenviable position in the administration of the third dose when compared to other industrialized nations. Among the G-7 countries, Canada ranks fifth, just ahead of the United States. Among countries with at least one million inhabitants, Chile leads the parade, followed by Denmark and the United Kingdom.
