Quebec Author Kevin Lambert’s Controversial Book Soars in Sales After François Legault’s Praise: An Analysis

2023-07-31 04:00:00

Do you remember Kevin Lambert, this Quebec author who found it “shabby” that François Legault publicly praised his book, May our joy remain?

According The Canadian Press“Kevin Lambert sold nearly twice as many copies of his book in the eight days following the publication of François Legault in comparison with the thirty days preceding it”.

“It’s substantial!”, “It’s exceptional!” exclaimed participants interviewed by La PC.

It proves that:

1-Legault is now an “influencer”.

2-It pays to send the PM for a walk.

IN MY BOOK

It’s still ironic: an author who abhors capitalism finds himself profiting from this same capitalism following having denounced the ugly capitalism of the PM.

In interview with The Canadian Press, Kevin Lambert affirms: “It was not a marketing operation on my part”. We doubt it. Marketing is dirty, it’s degrading, it’s despicable.

An author like Lambert doesn’t come down to mercantile considerations, come on! Môsieur has principles!

In his vitriolic outing on Facebook, Kevin Lambert had decried the principle of supply and demand in the field of real estate. I imagine that in the name of his principles, he will now give up the profit occasioned by this resurgence of sales of his books.

Or maybe he will redistribute these horribly acquired coins to starving writers. Or he will offer to pay the rent of vulnerable, marginalized tenants, oppressed by bloodthirsty landlords thirsty for profit.

No I’m kidding!

We all know very well that very few authors make a living from their writing in Quebec. That the royalties are starving, and that in addition, the authors are only paid several months following the release of their book.

What I just want to point out here is the farce of this whole controversy: a rude artist unable to thank a person who pays him a compliment just because that person represents the hated authority; an artist who denounces the hypocrisy of a reader who would have misunderstood his book, but who benefits directly from this good review, however clumsy it may be.

THE OPPRESSED LEFT?

Kevin Lambert says “having received threats, aggressive comments and derogatory messages”. I sincerely denounce these unjustified attacks.

But why does Lambert specify to The Canadian Press: “Every time we speak in the public space with a left-wing discourse, there is always a cost to that”?

The “left discourse” is 99% dominant in DutyTo The Press, at Radio-Canada (where Pénélope McQuade recently asserted that it is the mandate of her show to be “progressive”). It is 99% dominant in cultural institutions, granting agencies at all levels of government.

I would like to remind Mr Lambert that in recent years book launches by “right-wing” authors have had to take place under police escort, launches have been canceled because of threats, conferences have been cancelled, and that authors have been shunned by Quebec publishers because of their “right-wing” ideas.

Mr. Lambert, I confirm it to you, every time an author speaks in the public space, there is always a cost to pay. Whether on the right or on the left.
