Mohamed Quddous scored two goals, including the winning goal, to give Ghana an exciting 3-2 victory over South Korea in Group H at the Education City Stadium in the FIFA World Cup, Monday.
Contrary to the course of the game, Ghana advanced with a goal from Mohamed Salisu from close range, following South Korea failed to clear a free kick in the 24th minute, and Quddos added the second goal with a header ten minutes later, making the score 2-0.
South Korea rose up following the break, scoring twice in the space of three minutes in the second half, with two headers from Cho Gyu-sung, to equalize.
But Ghoddos scored the winning goal in the 68th minute when he appeared unmarked in the penalty area and fired the ball past goalkeeper Kim Seong-gyu.
The most famous match referee, British Anthony Taylor, issued a red card immediately following the end of the match in the face of Portuguese coach Paulo Bento, South Korea, following a sharp protest because the referee ended the match before the South Korean players executed a corner kick.
The referee counted 10 minutes instead of lost time, increasing it to nearly 11 minutes before ending the match.
There is no provision in football law that compels the referee to continue the match to execute a corner or free kick if its specified time has expired, and this does not apply to penalty kicks that must extend the life of the match until it is executed.
Ghana, which has the worst ranking in the tournament, which is 61st in the world, shares the summit with Portugal, with three points each, while Uruguay and South Korea have one point. Portugal plays Uruguay later today.
