Qualifying for FEMA Assistance for Illinois Floods: Who Can Apply and How to Apply

Torrential rains and flooding that fell on parts of Illinois in July affected hundreds of people, so the President Joe Biden’s administration approved a disaster declaration for Cook County.

With this emergency declaration, affected residents of Cook County whose properties or businesses suffered damage or loss may apply for federal assistance.

US citizens and residents may qualify for assistance, but those who are waiting for an immigration process might also request assistance, according to FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR FEMA DISASTER AID?

According to FEMA, permanent residents can apply for help, as well as people in Illinois affected by the natural disaster who have the following statuses:

Non-citizens who have been granted asylum Refugees Non-citizens whose removal has been withheld for at least one year Non-citizens paroled into the US for at least one year for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit Cuban entrants Haitian entrants Some not battered citizens or their spouses or children Some victims of severe human trafficking, including “T” and “U” visa holders

CAN UNDOCUMENTED PEOPLE QUALIFY FOR FEMA ASSISTANCE FOR NATURAL DISASTERS?

The information published by FEMA states that if a person’s immigration status does not meet any of the aforementioned requirements, they might still try to apply for assistance if their situation meets:

“The family can still apply and be considered for some federal assistance alternatives, as long as: Parent or guardian of a minor who is a United States citizen, non-citizen national or qualified non-citizen may apply on behalf of the minor, as long as they live in the same household. The parent or legal guardian must apply as a co-applicant and the child must be under 18 years of age at the time the disaster occurred,” according to FEMA.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DOES A PERSON NEED TO APPLY FOR FEMA AID?

Any documentation showing your status in the US will be needed to apply for disaster assistance.

WHO MAY NOT QUALIFY FOR HELP FROM FEMA?

Regardless of immigration status, if a person did not suffer from the ravages of the storms at the end of June and beginning of July, they will not be able to apply for assistance.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY?

The deadline to apply for FEMA Cook County natural disaster assistance is October 16.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN YOU RECEIVE FROM FEMA AID?

Those who qualify might get assistance of up to $41,000.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE A FEMA APPLICATION?

According to FEMA, applicants must provide the following information and documents:

Social Security Number (SSN) o the SSN of a minor child in the household who is a US citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien Annual household income Contact information (phone number, mailing address, email address*, and street address where damage occurred) Information Insurance (coverage, name of insurance company, etc.) Bank account information (if you are eligible for financial assistance, money may be deposited into your account)
