Qualcomm on Wednesday announced Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR), its own upscaling technology for mobile gaming. The tool is able to increase the output resolution and raise the frame rates per second in supported titles, promising an even closer mobile experience to the PC.
Instead of adopting the same bilinear interpolation technique used by the competition, the Snapdragon GSR performs single-pass spatial upscaling, which means that its algorithms look for balance consistent performance and artifact-free imaging with low power consumption.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon GSR uses fewer texture samples than rival technologies, resulting in more efficient use of the GPU’s shading processor, reducing frame times and optimizing power consumption.
The Snapdragon GSR is compatible with most embedded graphics cards, but according to Qualcomm, there are features optimized specifically on platforms equipped with an Adreno GPU. According to the manufacturer’s benchmark tests, the texture rendering using its technology is twice as fast than the competition.
Optimized for the Adreno GPU pipeline, range-aware dynamic scaling of this upscaling technique is capable of delivering superior graphics quality and power savings over other supersampling solutions available for mobile phones. capable of delivering 1080p upscaling to up to 4K.
To ensure that gamers configure their devices according to their needs during a gaming session, the Snapdragon GSR offers different modes that prioritize higher resolution, frame rate per second or battery life.
There is no definite list of platforms compatible with the Snapdragon GSR, but the US manufacturer indicates that tests have been carried out on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 6 Gen 1.
