The Liège public prosecutor’s office favors self-defense in the case of the quad driver killed on August 18 by police shooting, several media reported on Friday.
“The police used all the arrest techniques. At first, they put on their flashing lights, hoping that the driver would stop. They then placed their vehicle in such a way as to block the progress of the quad. Obviously this did not deter the driver who then backed up. Finally, they tried to grab him to extract him from the quad. It was only then that the two police officers, while continuing to issue arrest orders, jointly decided to approach it and showed their weapon, “explained Catherine Collignon, first deputy prosecutor of the King on Friday at a press conference.
“All report that the quad driver was driving excessively fast, endangering pedestrians and even motorists,” she said.
In addition, the automotive expertise confirms that “traces of contact that might be related to the crossing of a body dressed and lying on the ground” were observed under the quad, which corroborates the thesis of self-defense of ‘following the floor. “This confirms the thesis of the policeman who says that he found himself under the quad at some point”, adds Catherine Collignon.
The investigation is continuing, hearings are still planned. The results of certain expert appraisals are in particular awaited.
On August 18, Domenico D’atria was fatally shot by a police officer while riding a quad in the streets of Oupeye. According to the thesis of the police officers involved and several witnesses, he would have refused to comply with an identity check. His death triggered a series of scuffles in Oupeye, but also in Herstal.
