The absence of the 57-year-old Gang at the Asian Regional Forum and the East Asia Summit held a few days ago led to much discussion. His absence from public events has given rise to heated debates and rumours. An official representative of the Ministry of External Affairs explained that Gang is staying away from public life due to health problems. However, information regarding Gang’s illness and how long he will be away from public events has not been specified.
Qin Gang was replaced as the head of Beijing’s delegation to the ASEAN summit in Indonesia.
Another rumor is that Gang’s disappearance is due to his extramarital affair with television host Fu Qiuqian. Gang’s pictures and videos with Phu Qiaoqian were widely circulated on social media. Communist Party members are prohibited from having extramarital affairs. The gang is also believed to be staying away from public appearances as the matter is being investigated. Almost a month following his disappearance, China has yet to respond.
