Doha: Sheikha Moussa bint Nasser has resigned as Goodwill Ambassador in protest of UNESCO’s indifference when children were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza. Sheikha Mousa is the mother of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the chairperson of the Education Above All Foundation, an international educational organization.
“Al Jazeera” reported that the resignation of the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador was announced at the “United for Peace in Palestine” high-level summit held in Istanbul the other day regarding Israel’s attack on Gaza. Since 2003, Sheikha Moussa has been collaborating with the educational activities of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The main victims of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, which began on October 7, were innocent children and women. According to the figures till November 13, more than 4600 children were killed. The total death toll has risen to over 11,100. Al-Jazeera reported that Sheikha Moussa stated that the United Nations Organization, which works for education and others, has failed to protect the children of Gaza and provide them with humanitarian aid.
‘When children are attacked and schools are destroyed, UNESCO’s silence is disappointing. This is not in any way compatible with the objectives of UNESCO’ – said Shaikha Moussa. UNESCO has around 60 goodwill ambassadors including national leaders and celebrities from different parts of the world. The mission of Goodwill Ambassadors is to promote internationally the work of UNESCO in the fields of education, science and culture.
