Dubai United Arab Emirates (CNN)– Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman, said that his country is currently conducting a “comprehensive assessment” of its role as mediator in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Qatari Prime Minister’s statements come following an uproar sparked by a statement by Democratic Representative Steny Hoyer on Tuesday, during which he called on the United States to “reevaluate” its relations with Qatar.

Hoyer threatened, “If Qatar fails to exert this pressure (on Hamas to conclude an agreement regarding the hostages held in Gaza), the United States must re-evaluate its relationship with Qatar.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman said, during a joint conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, on Wednesday: “We saw that there is a misuse of mediation, and a misuse of mediation for narrow political interests, and this called for the State of Qatar to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of this role. We are now at this stage.” “.

He explained that Qatar is conducting a “comprehensive assessment of the mediation and how all parties engage” in the faltering negotiations.

He added: “There is exploitation and abuse of the Qatari role. This abuse is unacceptable. When we started this process (with Egypt), we engaged from a humanitarian standpoint and from a patriotic and nationalistic standpoint to protect our Palestinian brothers. But unfortunately we see that there are great political bidders, those with narrow interests, who are trying to Conducting election campaigns by abusing the role of the State of Qatar, and this is unacceptable.”

The Qatari official criticized “that we are told something in closed rooms, and outside of the country they start issuing statements that are unfortunately destructive and do not contribute positively,” stressing his country’s commitment to its role in mediation “from a humanitarian standpoint, but there are limits to this role, and limits to the ability with which we can contribute to… These negotiations are constructive, and the State of Qatar will take the appropriate decision regarding this.”

Earlier this week, an Israeli source revealed to CNN details regarding Hamas’ proposal regarding the first phase of a potential ceasefire agreement.
