The 2023 World Cup has not even started yet, but on the FIBA side we are already planning on what will happen next. The Federation announced this morning that the 2027 edition had been awarded to Qatar.
Another important victory for Qatar! Just months following hosting the FIFA World Cup, the country has been awarded a major new event: the 2027 Basketball World Cup. Information made official by FIBA in the early morning. This is the first time that the global competition will take place in the Middle East.

After Handball in 2015 and Football in 2022, Qatar is therefore attracting basketball into its nets. A good way to promote the orange ball a little in a country that does not have a great history with this sport. Never qualified for the Olympic Games, Qatar has participated in only one World Cup. It was 2006 and the team had finished in last place, with five defeats in as many games.
In its statement, the FIBA admits to having been impressed by the presentation of the Qatari project, citing in particular the positive aspects of the file, namely a World Cup organized in one and the same city (less logistical difficulty and less fatigue due to journeys therefore) and infrastructures already ready for the event.
The men will therefore be in Qatar in 2027 and the women will take the direction of Germany, but in 2026. The country had already hosted the Women’s World Cup, it was in 1998 and the Mannschaft had finished in eleventh place, far from the American ogre.
