Doha: Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmad bin Saif Al Thani, said that the family receives great attention and importance in Qatar. As the basic unit of social policies, the Qatari family is given much attention and consideration at the national, regional and international levels.

Their contribution is vital in achieving comprehensive, practical and sustainable social development. Sheikha Alya Althani said that the country is giving special emphasis to the importance of family-oriented social and economic policies.

This was stated in a recorded speech by Sheikha Alya at the 42nd session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Social Affairs held in Doha on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. She noted the Qatari government’s efforts and initiatives in the field of family, including hosting the 2004 Doha International Conference on the Family, which issued the Doha Declaration on the Family under the patronage of Sheikha Mousa bint Nasser.

Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York has undertaken the task of facilitating informal consultations on a draft resolution to declare the International Year of the Family at the United Nations General Assembly. Preparations for the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family have begun as per the resolution approved by the United Nations General Assembly last November.

Qatar has begun work to host an international conference to mark the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family in 2024. It is in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Sheikha Alya said that it will give more publicity to the concept of family according to Arab and Islamic culture.
