Qatar Football Association Sacks Carlos Queiroz as Coach Ahead of AFC Asian Cup

Doha ∙ Qatar’s national football team (Al Annabi) has been replaced by Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz. Spain’s Marquez Lopez was appointed as the new coach. Al Annabi’s training for the AFC Asian Cup hosted by Qatar in January was in progress. Al Annabi’s new head coach is Spaniard Marquez Lopez, coach of local club Al Wakrah Sports Club.

Meanwhile, the Qatar Football Association stated in a statement that Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz is stepping down from the coaching position by mutual agreement. Marcus Lopez will now train Al Annabi for the Asian Cup which will be held from January 12 to February 10 next year.

After five and a half years of service, Carlos was appointed as the coach of the Qatar national football team in January when the Spanish star Felix Sanchez stepped down on December 31. Qatar have won just 4 of the 11 matches Carlos has coached this year. 3 draws and 4 losses. Qatar has made a good start in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 qualifiers.
