A graphic revival
The opportunity therefore to rediscover an RPG hitherto outdated in terms of graphics. This new version allows you to discover this adventure produced by the Furyo studio on behalf of Nis America, in the best possible conditions. It embodies a protagonist who wakes up one fine day in the middle of a ceremony organized in a high school. He quickly realizes that his “comrades” are not really, and that he is rather in a parallel world with people who do not necessarily wish him well. Fortunately for him, he meets other people in his case, gathered in Club K. Their objective is simple: to unite to find the real world.
We obviously feel the Persona touch. This is especially no coincidence since the game is worn by veterans of the Atlus series, starting with Tadashi Satomi, who notably scripted episode 2.
We said it a little higher: the game is technically ready. The textures are clean, the framerate smooth and it’s a pleasure to advance a rather well-written story. If you have already played the second episode, you nevertheless prefer the latter as it sublimates the formula and corrects one of the main pitfalls of this episode: its level design.
Because if the artistic direction is very pleasant, the level design is sometimes completely missed, and it is almost a chore to chain the fights to reach the bosses. These parts are sometimes sorely lacking in challenge and it’s a shame since the fights are generally quite successful and allow the game to pull out of the game despite everything.
JRPG fans with Persona sauce will therefore certainly be delighted to discover this “Caligula Effect: Overdose”. The title published by NIS takes up the codes of the genre without managing to sublimate them, which however risks cooling some of them. As for those who discover the genre, we can only advise them to directly embark on a Persona, or even a Shin Megami Tensei.
