A little insider tip of reef-heavy dream worlds is getting ready to land once more. Pyramid You might already know them from their festival appearances and support gigs for greats like Color Haze, RoToR or Elder. The trio from Nuremberg established themselves on an EP and an album as an instrumental rock force that combines doomy stoner walls with psychedelic, expansive songwriting including a jam character. „Beyond Borders Of Time“ Sounds pretty much as you would expect based on the album title.
The wonderfully meandering precursor “Solar Flare” sums up the charming peculiarity within seconds, as it propagates eerie space rock ideas with its stylish psych structure, around which is an initially slow, probing arrangement. Pyramid are looking for a magical moment and strive to create an ominous atmosphere of optimism that collides with unrest. We know that something can happen at any time, supported by relevant hints. The classic post-rock structure with increasing distortion works towards the inevitable climax, which largely fizzles out. Relatively little happens, apart from the last 30 to 40 seconds, but it is precisely in this approach that there is so much appeal.
While you’re still philosophizing regarding this unorthodox ride, the following “Krypta” unpacks a scrubbing Lemmy bass. Instead of Motörhead revelry, however, it’s dark stoner doom, full of nervous twitches. The opening “The Medicine Man” also finds its magnetic riff within a very short time and relies on heavyness, which knows how to get out of hand following a short break. Not for the last time, Pyramid play with hints of post-rock and create a huge main part that is courageous and at the same time leaves room for smaller experiments and games with the fine blade. There is a surprising amount of charm in this lived contradiction, which is escalating more and more.
A lot of fuzz, a lot of feeling, a lot of tension: “Beyond Borders Of Time” only reveals its full appeal following one or two listens and doesn’t let go so quickly. Behind the psychedelic stoner primal force there is a wildly beating heart for song construction, for precise storytelling and the occasional courageous surprise with post and space charm. Pyramid seem to have all the time in the world, revealing their attention to detail with raw energy and finding their eye for the beauty of the moment even in harsh moments of complete distortion. The second of the trio goes straight to the heart – a magical thing from start to finish.
