“The Korean People’s Army will never tolerate military moves by the United States and South Korea that threaten the security environment of the Korean Peninsula,” the official said.
“The hostile forces can never evade the heavy responsibility for escalating tensions, and they will have to pay a heavy price,” he said.
The official commented on other military exercises by the two allies, including the Ssangyong drills, which are scheduled to end on Friday and focus on training marines from both countries for amphibious landings.
“The maneuvers are an extremely reckless and dangerous military operation that presupposes an open invasion of North Korea’s sacred territory,” he said.
On August 29, the South Korean military announced that it would conduct joint special operations exercises with the United States to enhance reconnaissance and strike capabilities.
The five-day drill began at the Army’s Special Warfare Academy in Gwangju, 32 kilometers southeast of Seoul. It involved troops from the Army’s Special Warfare Command, the Air Force’s Combat Control Team and the U.S. 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade.
