In the Russian republic of Chechnya, which is violently led by ruler Ramzan Kadyrov, a signal of loyalty is being sent to the Kremlin. In the Caucasus, Russian President Putin is credited with having an above-average election result.
In the Russian republic of Chechnya in the North Caucasus, President Vladimir Putin was awarded a national record of 98.99 percent of the vote by the electoral commission in the neither free nor fair vote for his re-election. Participation was therefore 97 percent. This means that the former war zone, which traditionally delivers high election results for political leadership, exceeds the result from 2018 (91.44 percent) and is ahead across Russia.
In the other Caucasus republics, the incumbent was also considered to have an above-average result, mostly at around 90 percent. After counting almost all the papers, the electoral commission awarded Putin more than 87 percent of the votes – more than ever in his four previous elections.
In 2012, Putin’s result was slightly better
Putin achieved the best official result in Chechnya in 2012, when he received 99.76 percent. At that time, voter turnout was said to have been 99.61 percent. However, votes in Chechnya are generally considered questionable – even more so than in other parts of Russia. Observers speak of repression, coercion and fraud in the region.
Chechnya is led by ruler Ramzan Kadyrov. He is considered a tyrant who is accused of the most serious human rights violations and also political contract killings. At the same time, he presents himself as a loyal follower of Putin.
