Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the USA of plans to resume nuclear weapons tests and threatened to take countermeasures. In such a case, Russia would also consider starting new nuclear weapons tests. The Kremlin chief said this in an interview on Russian state television late Tuesday evening. Putin emphasized that Russia’s nuclear weapons arsenal is one of the most modern in the world.

According to him, the USA is currently in the process of renewing its nuclear forces. This does not mean that they are ready to start a nuclear war, but there are efforts in certain circles in Washington to not only explore the possibilities of the new warheads on the computer, but to check them in real tests. «We know regarding it. And we’ll take a look too,” he said. He did not provide any evidence to support his claims regarding the US plans.

More on the subject of Russian nuclear weapons

No more nuclear weapons tests since the 1990s

At the same time, Putin once once more denied that Russia had considered using tactical nuclear weapons in the wake of the Ukraine war. From a technical point of view, Moscow is ready to use this weapon of mass destruction. However, according to its own defense doctrine, this will only happen “if the existence of the Russian state and damage to our sovereignty and independence are at stake,” he said.

An international nuclear test ban treaty was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1996. The USA has not ratified the treaty. Russia then withdrew its ratification at the end of 2023. However, both countries have not carried out nuclear weapons tests since the 1990s. (SDA/chs)
