Tensions are growing after Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a strong warning against the Western idea of sending troops to Ukraine.

“A new attempt to intervene in Russia could lead to a large-scale conflict, including the use of nuclear weapons,” Putin said in his State of the Union address to lawmakers at Gostiny Dvor near the Kremlin in Moscow.

This is a warning issued in reference to the fact that North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states have recently discussed sending troops to Ukraine.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said on the 26th that “nothing has been agreed upon” about the possibility of NATO member countries sending troops to Ukraine, but that “nothing should be ruled out.”

In response, the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom immediately announced that they had no plans to dispatch troops, but this statement caused quite a stir.

Looking back on the past history of Hitler and Napoleon bringing troops to Russia and failing, President Putin said, “The consequences for those who intervene this time will be even more tragic,” and added, “We have weapons that can strike their territory.”

He also emphasized, “All this they are doing to scare the whole world will mean the actual use of nuclear weapons and the subsequent destruction of civilization.”

At the same time, President Putin boasted that Russia’s strategic nuclear weapons were in full readiness.

Tests of next-generation nuclear weapons, including the nuclear-powered cruise missile Burevestnik and the nuclear-powered torpedo Poseidon, are nearing completion, and the new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Sarmat is currently deployed to the military and will soon be used for combat missions.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that President Putin, who is running for a fifth term in the presidential election held on the 15th to 17th of next month, spoke today not only as president but also as an election candidate, and that he wrote the speech himself.

President Putin, who will extend his term until 2030 if elected this time, said that within six years Russia will become one of the four largest economies based on purchasing power, and that he plans to invest heavily in economic and social sectors, such as support for large families and education.
