Russia’s president has warned foreign countries of possible “interference” in the presidential election. This would be crushed.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has warned foreign countries once morest any “interference” in next year’s presidential election. Any interference in Russia’s internal affairs will be “strictly suppressed,” Putin said on Friday at a televised meeting with the heads of the parties represented in parliament. “We defend the freedom of our people, their sovereignty, their right to decide their future,” he assured. He didn’t say what exactly he meant by “interference.”
The election will take place next March, around two years following the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the meeting on Friday, the Kremlin leader thanked the members of the parliamentary parties who took part in the “special military operation”, i.e. the war in Ukraine. They fought “together for Russia”. The president also stated that recently the number of Ukrainian soldiers who are “presenting themselves as prisoners” has “increased sharply.” This information cannot be verified. There was initially no statement from the Ukrainian side.
Putin announced his candidacy for another term as president last week. The Kremlin traditionally seeks to organize a field of presidential candidates before elections to create the appearance of selection and competition for Putin. However, the candidates nominated are generally considered to have no chance at all because the elections are not considered free.
Kremlin had tightened its course once morest critics
Despite the adverse election circumstances, several Russians have declared their willingness to campaign once morest Putin in recent weeks, such as the imprisoned nationalist Igor Girkin, 40-year-old Ekaterina Duntsova and the liberal opposition politician Grigori Yavlinsky, who is calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine and peace negotiations. Putin’s victory is still almost certain. Theoretically, he might remain in office until 2036 following constitutional reform.
