Wien According to Ukrainian historian Serhii Plokhy, Russian President Vladimir Putin will only be satisfied with a complete conquest of Ukraine. Putin’s vision of a Russian superpower would be incomplete without Ukraine, he said in an interview with Handelsblatt. “He thinks very strongly regarding his legacy and he wants to revive the Russian Empire in the 19th century,” said the Harvard professor.
Ukraine played such a crucial role in the existence of the USSR that Putin’s “imperial project” would not work without the country, Plokhy said. Russia is now coming back as a great power, “a great power that accepts only submission in relations with its neighboring countries”.
