Moscow: President Vladimir Putin told Russian women to give birth to eight or more children. Putin was addressing a meeting of the World Russian People’s Council in Moscow on Tuesday. Putin added that Russia should aim to increase its population in the coming decades.

“Many of our tribes continue the tradition of giving birth to four, five or more children. If we remember Russian families, our grandmothers and so on had seven, eight or even more children. We must preserve these traditions. Big families should be our way. Should be the way of life of all Russians. The family is not only the foundation of the nation and society, but also a spiritual phenomenon and the source of dharma. Our goal in the coming decades should be to increase and preserve Russia’s population. This is the future of the Russian world” – said Putin, addressing the conference virtually.

The birth rate in Russia has been declining since the 1990s. International media reports that around 300,000 Russians have lost their lives since the war in Ukraine began in February last year.
