Putin to the West: «No one can threaten us, nuclear weapons always ready»

The most venerated flag, raised by the soldiers of the Red Army over the Reichstag on 1 May 1945, as always had the place of honour, parading first: it is the official symbol of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. At ten o’clock, Moscow time, the sky above Red Square turned leaden.

It will be remembered as the great Military Snow Parade in May, in tune with the chill tone of Vladimir Putin, who spoke in what he called “our most sacred holiday”. In the name of this celebration, of which May 9th marks the 79th anniversary in Russia (Germany’s surrender came into force on May 8th at 11.01pm, when it was already past midnight in Moscow), Putin immediately went to attack by Ukraine and the West, the ally of the Great Patriotic War, the Second World War.

Putin: the West distorts history on the war

«Today – Putin began – we see how they try to erase the truth about the war. It annoys those who are used to constructing their own truth, a colonial policy of lies and hypocrisy. They tear down memorials to fighters against Nazism, put traitors and collaborators of the Nazis on pedestals, and tarnish the memory of the liberators. Revanchism, distortion of history, attempt to absolve the current heirs of the Nazis: all this is part of the policy of Western elites intent on inflaming new regional conflicts, international and inter-religious hostilities.”

As Putin spoke, the skies brightened. «Russia – said the head of the Kremlin – will do everything possible to not allow a global confrontation. But we will not allow anyone to threaten us. We reject the claim to exclusivity of any Government or any alliance, we know what such an unbalanced ambition leads to. Our strategic forces – clarified the Russian president referring to the most powerful nuclear arsenals – are always ready to go into action.”

Putin: Don’t forget the lessons of World War II

In the West, Putin said, “they would like to forget the lessons of the Second World War, but Russia remembers well that the fate of humanity was decided in the epic battles near Moscow and Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kursk, Kharkiv, Minsk, Smolensk and Kiev, on the bloody battlefields from Murmansk to the Caucasus, to the Crimea. For this reason, Russia has never diminished the importance (of the opening of) a second front, and the contribution of the allies. We honor the courage of all the fighters of the anti-Hitler coalition, the partisans. The courage of the Chinese people committed to defending their independence against Japan’s aggression. We will never forget our common struggle.”
