Talks regarding Ukraine
According to the Kremlin, the official visit by Modi will also include discussions regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It will be interesting for Western observers, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, referring to the fact that Modi, to Kiev’s annoyance, stayed away from the Ukraine-initiated peace summit in Switzerland in June. It was unclear whether the serious Russian missile attack that damaged a children’s hospital in Kiev will also be discussed.
India is trading more and more intensively with the raw materials superpower and is now a major buyer of Russian oil. Moscow media had already reported in recent days that Modi’s trip following his re-election was a special sign of appreciation for India’s relations with Russia. From Moscow to Austria
“We strive to play a supporting role for a peaceful and stable region,” Modi said. He said he was looking forward to discussing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with his “friend” Putin. A celebratory banquet with Putin is planned for the evening.
After his visit to Russia, Modi will travel on to Austria. It is the first time in more than 40 years that an Indian prime minister has visited the country. Modi will be received by President Alexander van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
