President Vladimir Putin asked the Russian parliament to pass a bill to terminate 21 treaties with the European Council amid the escalating tension between the two sides over the Ukraine issue.
RT On January 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially submitted a bill to terminate treaties with Europe to Speaker of the House of Representatives Vyacheslav Volodin.
According to the bill, international agreements between Russia and the European Council will be considered invalid from March 16. These agreements include the Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the European Convention once morest Terrorism, etc.
In March last year, Russia announced that it was leaving the European Council before Europe’s top human rights watchdog announced the planned expulsion of Russia.
The move comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Europe due to the conflict in Ukraine. In response to Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, the European Union (EU) has approved nine packages of sanctions once morest Moscow. In addition, along with the US, these countries also continuously provide military aid to Kiev. The leaders of the US and EU pledged to support Ukraine for as long as possible to help it be in a better position on the battlefield and at the negotiating table with Russia.
Moscow believes that the war in Ukraine is in fact a confrontation between Russia and NATO, and warns that the West’s continuous supply of weapons and military equipment to Kiev will only prolong the conflict.
