Putin: Power of Siberia-2 project under government review

“We see good prospects for cooperation in the gas sector. The design of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline, which is about a thousand kilometers long and will connect Russia, Mongolia and China, has been completed,” Putin said.

The Russian President added that “the state examination of the project is currently being conducted, and its impact on the environment is being assessed,” and he also indicated that the possibility of supplying gas via the pipeline to consumers in Mongolia is being studied.

The Russian President noted that the talks in Ulaanbaatar focused on developing trade and investment relations. He stressed that Russia reliably supplies the Mongolian economy with energy resources and meets fuel supply requests on preferential terms.

Putin also said that Russia is open to implementing peaceful nuclear projects with Mongolia.

For his part, Mongolian President Ukhnangiin Khurelsukh noted that relations between Russia and Mongolia have strengthened and reached the level of comprehensive strategic partnership. He stressed that Putin’s visit to Mongolia is important for developing relations and cooperation between the two countries, including in the energy sector.

Putin arrived in Mongolia yesterday, Monday, on a visit aimed at enhancing cooperation in various fields, especially the economic field.

The Power of Siberia-2 project is under preparation and planning and includes laying a pipeline with a capacity of 50 billion cubic meters per year from Russia to China via Mongolia. Within the framework of the project, Russian gas will be pumped from fields in the Yamal Peninsula (Western Siberia in Russia) and the Nadym-Bur-Taz region in the Yamalo-Nenets region (northern Russia near the Arctic region).
