Putin on Russian-Azerbaijani negotiations in Baku: an opportunity to determine steps for the future

At the beginning of the talks, the Russian President expressed his appreciation for the level of Russian-Azerbaijani relations, stressing that the talks in the expanded framework are an opportunity to determine steps to develop relations between the two countries in the future.

Putin said, “The two delegations are widely represented on both sides, and all agreements concluded in 2022 are being implemented, and work within the expanded framework contributes to determining the next steps in the future.”

For his part, Aliyev praised the bilateral relations, pointing to the existence of positive dynamics, and said: “We have the intention to strengthen cooperation in all directions, and I am confident that your visit will be an important step on this path.”

Putin arrived in the capital Baku on Sunday for a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening historical relations with Azerbaijan.

The Russian delegation includes Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Maxim Oreshkin, Russian Presidential Aides Yuri Ushakov and Ruslan Edelgiryev, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov and other officials.

Russia and Azerbaijan have historical and strategic relations since the time of the former Soviet Union, and during the time of the Russian Empire, where Russia played a pivotal role in Azerbaijan’s independence from the Persian state, and recognized it as an independent state following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Moscow signed new relations with Baku on April 4, 1992, while continuing to strengthen and develop them to this day within the framework of a strategic alliance and partnership.

Cooperation between the two countries is based on 170 treaties and agreements in all fields, including 50 agreements in the economic field.
