Putin expressed concern for Gaza’s civilians in a meeting with Abbas

– We are most concerned about the civilian victims, Putin said in images shown on state television.

– We do everything to support Palestine and the Palestinian people, he said further. The only way to create “long-lasting, credible and stable peace in the region” is to implement all UN resolutions and create a full-fledged Palestinian state, he added.

– We see Russia as one of the closest friends of the Palestinian people, Abbas told Putin.

Abbas heads the Palestinian movement Fatah, which leads the Palestinian Authority and is at odds with Hamas.

Since the Hamas attack on October 7 and the subsequent outbreak of war, Russia has harshly criticized Israel’s warfare and urged the parties to exercise restraint.

– They are going to talk about Russia’s role and what can be done, said Abdel Hafiz Nofal, the Palestinians’ ambassador in Moscow, to the state-run Russian news agency Tass ahead of the meeting.

– We have a very difficult situation, and Russia is a country that is close to us. We have to talk together, he continued.

On Wednesday, Abbas will continue to Istanbul for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
