Putin says the sailors are fighting bravely, congratulates servicemen, veterans and all citizens during Navy Day speech

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the military, veterans and all citizens of the country on Navy Day during a speech in St. Petersburg.

“Comrades sailors and starshinas [mayores al mando], midshipmen and officers, generals and admirals, dear veterans, dear Russian citizens, I congratulate you on Navy Day! Our Navy has been for centuries and remains the unshakable guardian of the borders of the motherland, its pride and glory,” Putin said.

“In the name of Russia, our sailors give all their strength, show true heroism, fight bravely, like our great ancestors,” he said. “I thank the personnel of the Russian Navy for the impeccable fulfillment of the tasks before you, for their reliability, diligence, constancy, for their perfect devotion to the fatherland!”

During his speech, Putin announced that the Russian Navy will acquire 30 new ships this year, including the Mercury missile corvette.

Putin said the Mercury missile corvette was named following him in memory of the “immortal feat” of the crew of a “legendary” Russian brig, known for its battle with two ships in the 19th century.

This year, 45 ships, boats and submarines, as well as some 3,000 military personnel, took part in the parade, according to the Kremlin.

After the main part of the parade, Putin spoke to some of the honored guests, including leaders of several African nations who stayed in St. Petersburg following the conclusion of the Russia-Africa summit.

Putin spoke with the president of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, the interim president of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, and other heads of delegation, according to the state agency TASS.
