President Putin noted that this action by Russia comes in response to the deployment of US missiles around the world.
The Russian president said that the United States had already practiced transferring missile systems from its territory to Denmark and the Philippines.
President Putin said that this situation is reminiscent of the events of the Cold War, when American medium-range Pershing missiles were deployed in European countries.
The head of state stressed that if the United States deploys American missiles in Germany, Russia will consider itself not obligated to continue the voluntary moratorium on the deployment of its medium- and shorter-range missiles in the region.
In early July, shortly before the NATO summit, Berlin and Washington issued a joint statement confirming that the United States would begin deploying long-range missile systems of the Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) in Germany in 2026. These include Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles, as well as very long-range hypersonic weapons that are under development.
President Putin stressed that Russia will continue to develop air defense systems on the near and far borders.
“We will continue to… develop reconnaissance, surveillance and air defence systems on the near and far borders,” Putin said.
