It uses a very simple type of sonar system to accomplish this: Sonar Power Manager uses ultrasound (sound above 20 kHz in frequency that humans cannot hear) on your computer’s regular sound system.
While most laptops can use ultrasound, some cannot. In such cases, the Sonar Power Manager will not correctly detect the user’s presence or produce disturbing harmonics or low frequency noise during sonar operation.
This free software was developed with researchers from Northwestern University and the University of Michigan.
