Pushed into 100-meter-long pipe: dead while working in sewer system

According to information from the district fire department on Thursday, a man was probably pushed into a 100-meter-long pipe by a flood wave in the sewer system. Extensive rescue measures followed, but the worker succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

The accident occurred during measures to fix a sewerage rupture in an underground pipeline near a field path. The man was probably pushed into the pipe, which has a diameter of 60 centimeters. According to the “Kurier”, an air cushion used to secure the shaft may have burst, causing the incoming water to flood the sewer.

Hours of use

The helpers were deployed for hours. Four underwater pumps were positioned in various shafts, and members of the diving group South of the Lower Austrian State Fire Brigade Association were also called in. The injured man might not be located for a long time. The man was ultimately rescued using rope technology.
