Late on Wednesday followingnoon, a puppy fell into the Reuss in front of the Bremgarten-Bruggmühle small hydroelectric power station in Bremgarten. His owner jumped following him to save the dog. Luckily, residents quickly intervened and were able to rescue the man and his puppy from the cold Reuss.
As Manfred Tschannen, head of the Bremgarten regional police, told “Argovia Today”, the off-leash puppy squeezed itself under the railing and fell.
Resident Heinz Widmer found out regarding this when someone rang the bell at his door. “I opened the door and someone said in a panic that someone was in the water with their dog,” he told Tele M1/Argovia Today. He knew that things had to happen quickly and that’s why he got his ladder. Although there were life rings on site, it would have taken too long to get to them.
“He mightn’t have held on much longer.”
Other bystanders helped Widmer with the ladder and called the ambulance and the police. So they were able to get the puppy and its owner out of the Reuss: “It was high time. He mightn’t have held on much longer. It was really a matter of minutes.” The man was shaking badly and Widmer’s neighbor brought him tea. «Everything went well. He was very lucky,” said Widmer.
The incident ended lightly: The dog owner had to be taken to the hospital because of hypothermia, but was otherwise uninjured. The puppy is also doing well, says Tschannen.
