Horse Racing Preview: Punchestown and Haydock
Ah, Saturday, the one day of the week where your wallet can either get fat or flat! Grab a cuppa and let’s dive into the upcoming races, where we’ve got State Man and Lossiemouth strutting their stuff like two peacocks vying for your attention. Or your money, let’s be honest.
Punchestown
12:00 Zillow
First up, we have a horse named Zillow—not to be confused with your last home search! Zillow is making his mark against Sermandzarak. I mean, can anyone else pronounce that? You might need the entire English language to understand who’s competing here! Having been bought at Arcana last year, Zillow looks like he could hurdle his way into your good books—if he can manage that jumping thing, of course. Otherwise, he might just be looking for a place to crash after a long day of losing!
12:30 Ballyburn
Ballyburn’s jumping from point-to-point to chasing—talk about a career change! He’s been mastering the art of fence jumping at home, and who wouldn’t want to test that under pressure? They say you only live once, but you can have a full career surviving jumps! Let’s see if he can jump higher than our expectations!
12:30 Gold Dancer
This horse could improve with jumping but has only had two runs with us since his French excursion. You could say he’s still got a bit of a learning curve, but perhaps with a name like Gold Dancer, he’ll put on a show! Maybe just don’t ask him to tango; I hear horses have two left feet!
12:30 Ocastle Des Mottes
Now Ocastle Des Mottes has been a bit of a disappointment—your classic underachiever, really. He’s switching to fences in hopes of turning his life around. It’s like getting a job in a completely different field! Here’s hoping he finds his groove, or at the very least, his sense of direction!
14:10 Daddy Long Legs
A name like Daddy Long Legs might conjure up visions of oversized spiders and awkwardly lanky individuals, but this horse has been slightly in-and-out recently. Much like my attempts at flirting, it’s hard to find something consistent! He won his maiden hurdle here, so he’s clearly got potential and a better track record than most of us.
14:10 Sir Gerhard
Sir Gerhard prefers jumping hurdles over fences. Sounds like he’s figuring out his life before the big test, doesn’t it? With a solid 150 rating, he’s ready for his shot at glory, but really needs to prove he can master the technique. Bring on the personal improvement journey!
14:10 State Man
Ah, the man of the hour—State Man! In great form and itching to start his season, he’s got the vibes of an over-caffeinated office worker the Monday after a long holiday. And with no negatives coming into his race, we’re all expecting a performance that could end up being legendary… or at least a good anecdote for the bar later!
14:10 Winter Fog
Winter Fog, rated 150, but is he really a genuine 150? That’s the question, isn’t it? Kind of like asking if we’ve genuinely had a good weekend or just a good story to tell. He’ll need to surprise us if he wants to keep his head above the competition!
14:10 Lossiemouth
Lossiemouth! The starlet who dazzled last season but is now tackling the two-mile distance after a break. If she gets it right, she could take down State Man… but let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. It’s like getting all dressed up for a party but forgetting your wallet at home!
Haydock
15:05 Capodanno
And now we glide over to Haydock, where Capodanno has decided to brave the Betfair Chase like a warrior entering an all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s competitive, but if he pulls off his Cotswold Chase performance, don’t be surprised if we all have to lift our jaws off the floor. Brian Hayes is taking the reins, which is fabulous news for fans of unexpected outcomes!

Our esteemed columnist returns to unveil an exhilarating Saturday lineup featuring the promising talent of State Man and the determined Lossiemouth.
With the sun shining down and the ground finally softening, we are eager to watch our top contenders take center stage during two thrilling days of racing at Punchestown.
Punchestown
12:00 Zillow
This race presents a challenging task for Zillow as he competes against the accomplished Sermandzarak, who clinched the Goffs Defender Bumper at Punchestown under the guidance of trainer Gordon Elliott. After acquiring Zillow at the Arcana auction last year, we believe he shows remarkable potential to shine as he transitions to hurdling. He enters this race with a commendable rating on the Flat, and if he adapts to the hurdles smoothly, he could emerge as a significant contender this Saturday.
12:30 Ballyburn
This season, we have chosen to focus on chasing for Ballyburn. He has been demonstrating promising jumping skills during our training sessions at home, and his prior experience in point-to-pointing adds to his credentials. I am genuinely pleased with his development as we prepare for his eagerly awaited chasing debut.
12:30 Gold Dancer
Gold Dancer is a horse with the potential to excel over fences. We eagerly anticipate this Saturday’s outing as he only has had two runs since transitioning from his previous career in France, leaving ample room for improvement.
12:30 Ocastle Des Mottes
So far, Ocastle Des Mottes has yet to deliver the performances we had hoped for. We are optimistic that shifting his focus to chasing will yield better results. This race represents a solid starting point for him as he embarks on a new journey.
14:10 Daddy Long Legs
Daddy Long Legs has exhibited inconsistency in his performances, making it a challenge to find suitable races for him. Despite the ups and downs, his current rating necessitates participation in competitive events like this one, and the track has historically favored him. He previously triumphed in his maiden hurdle here, followed by success in a good handicap, so we are confidently allowing him to take his shot this time around.
14:10 Sir Gerhard
Sir Gerhard appears to prefer the challenge of hurdles over fences, prompting our decision to kick off his season in the Morgiana. While he may explore various formats throughout the year, his impressive rating of 150 justifies his inclusion in this event. When his jumping techniques are on point, he stands to make a significant impact at this competitive level.
14:10 State Man
State Man is in exceptional condition at home, and excitement builds as we prepare for his season opener. He has consistently performed well at this track, and there are no concerns as we head into the race. We expect nothing short of an outstanding performance from him.
14:10 Lossiemouth
Last season, Lossiemouth consistently delivered solid performances, and she appears to have returned from her summer break in great shape. However, approaching two miles for the first time since her juvenile days may prove to be a bit sprightly for her. Nonetheless, she navigates this track effectively and will seize the opportunity to challenge State Man.
Haydock
15:05 Capodanno
Capodanno has been supplemented for the prestigious Betfair Chase as of Monday. This represents a lucrative opportunity, and we felt it was worthwhile to throw our hat into the ring. Despite the competitive nature of the event, if he can replicate his performance from the Cotswold Chase, he stands a solid chance. Additionally, Brian Hayes will be making the journey to ride him, adding to our anticipation.
