On Thursday, a deal seemed imminent. Puigdemont, who is in Brussels to escape Spanish legal proceedings over his role in Catalonia’s attempted secession in 2017, had summoned the leadership of his party, Together for Catalonia (Junts per Catalunya, JxCat), in a hotel in the Belgian capital. Everything was ready, including a lectern with a microphone bearing his name for a speech.
However, at the end of the day, the microphone and speakers disappeared, and Puigdemont posted a message on social media calling for “prudence“, suggesting that his party’s support was not easily won, particularly for Pedro Sánchez’s Socialists.
On X (ex-Twitter) the independence leader indicates: “We have always affirmed that within the framework of the Spanish political system, all possible precautions must be taken. We maintain this position and strengthen it. We are not going to abandon the caution and precautions that we have maintained until now, no matter how much pressure some people put on us..”
