Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands under alert for possible tropical storm

Puerto Rico e Virgin Islands Americans remain under a tropical storm warning Monday morning as what is considered the fifth tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season moves into the future.

According to the bulletin issued at 08:00 (12:00 GMT) by the National Meteorological Service (SNM) of San Juan, the disturbance is moving west at a speed of 26 miles per hour (42 km/h) and has sustained winds of 30 miles per hour (48 km/h).

The depression is located 1,336 kilometers east-southeast of San Juan, the bulletin added.

No changes were made to the forecast. Therefore, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands remain under a tropical storm watch,” the SNM said in its X account.

According to the NWS, the tropical system is expected to produce between 7.6 and 15 centimeters of rain in Puerto Rico, although it could reach 25 centimeters. In the Virgin Islands, precipitation is expected to range between 15 and 20 centimeters, with some areas receiving even higher amounts.

In addition, these rains could cause landslides and flash floods.
