Puebla Congress approves decriminalization of abortion

PUEBLA.- With 29 votes in favor, 7 once morest and 4 abstentions, the Congress of the State of Puebla approved the amendments to the Penal Code of the Free and Sovereign State of Puebla, thus decriminalizing abortion up to 12 weeks of gestation.

This measure aims to prevent women and pregnant people from being criminalised if they decide to terminate their pregnancy.

The approval of this reform makes Puebla the 14th federal entity in Mexico to allow legal abortion up to 12 weeks.

This new legislation seeks protect and guarantee sexual rights and reproductive rights of women and pregnant people, giving them the freedom to make decisions regarding their bodies without facing criminal consequences.

The session, which took place amid a climate of tension with demonstrations both for and once morest decriminalization, marked a milestone in the history of the state, reflecting a significant change in health policy and reproductive rights in Puebla.

The initiative was promoted following years of pressure by feminist groups and human rights defenders, who have worked hard to bring the legislation into line with the Recommendations of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nationwhich has recognized the right of women and pregnant people to decide regarding their bodies.

With this reform, an improvement in health and safety conditions for women and pregnant people in Puebla is expected, avoiding clandestine and dangerous practices that put at risk the life and integrity of those who choose to terminate their pregnancy.
